How to Pack a Large Mirror for Moving Securely

Moving fragile items like large mirrors can be a tricky task. Not only are mirrors heavy, but they’re also prone to breakages during transit. However, there are steps that you can take to give your mirror the best level of protection and ensure its safety, no matter how many miles it has to travel.

Take a look at our step-by-step guide to learn how to pack large mirrors for moving.

1. Prepare your packing materials

Before you start packing up your mirror, make sure you’ve got all the packing supplies you might need to hand.

We’d advise you to stock up on sheets of packing paper, mirror boxes, bubble wrap and packing tape. You’ll also need a large piece of cardboard and a roll of masking tape. Fragile warning stickers will also help if you have any available.

2. Make a mirror box

If you want to keep your mirror safe, it’s worth investing in a specialised mirror box for the journey. Choose a size suitable for your mirror, bearing in mind you’ll need extra room for packaging materials. Mirror boxes come as separate pieces of cardboard, so you’ll simply need to put the box together using the instructions provided.

3. Add masking tape

You can take steps to give your mirror a little extra protection if it gets knocked or bumped. We recommend making a masking tape cross that goes from corner to corner of the mirror. Not only will this help to protect the mirror, but it’ll also mean that should any breakages occur, all pieces will be well contained, and the damage will be limited.

4. Wrap in a layer of brown paper

Wrap the mirror as if it were a Christmas present. Using brown paper, wrap the entire mirror as tightly as you can. Then, add a layer of bubble wrap around the parcel. This method of packaging works well for picture frames and mirrors alike.

5. Put the mirror into your box

Carefully place the packaged mirror into your prepared mirror box. Slide the mirror into the box slowly, keeping an eye out for any areas that might benefit from additional packing materials. If there are any gaps, you can close these using additional bubble wrap.

6. Label the box

Once the mirror is inside the box, it’s a good idea to label it clearly because even if you know the contents are fragile, someone who doesn’t may be tempted to lend a helping hand. Write the words ‘fragile’ and ‘mirror’ on every side of the box, so it’s crystal clear what’s inside.

7. Test your box

Your mirror will now be packed up and ready to go. It’s just a case of lifting the box to check if the mirror doesn’t move. The task is complete if you can’t feel any movement and the mirror seems secure inside the box. It’s then loading the mirror into your chosen transport and sending it safely on its way.
